Enlarged male breasts, or gynecomastia, is a condition many men suffer from. Nearly 40 to 60 percent of males experience some form of overly large breasts at some point in their life. Gynecomastia may develop for several reasons, such as hormonal changes, weight gain, the use of certain drugs, heredity, or other medical conditions. When a man has excess glandular tissue and fat that causes the appearance of female-like breasts, it can make him feel less masculine. Male breast reduction surgery, or gynecomastia surgery, can be performed by Dr. Perez-Gurri in Miami to help a man feel more confident both physically and emotionally.
Males who have excess glandular tissue and fat that cause the appearance of female-like breasts should wait to undergo gynecomastia surgery until they have reached full development. Typically, gynecomastia caused by puberty in teenagers may resolve naturally as they mature.
Before undergoing gynecomastia surgery, it is important that a man is physically and emotionally healthy. Patients should have realistic expectations about the procedure and should not have any serious medical conditions. A man should be in good physical shape before his surgery date.
Many men who have excess glandular tissue and fat that cause the appearance of female-like breasts can achieve a chest that appears firmer and more masculine. After gynecomastia surgery, patients will notice improvement in the chest contour that helps them feel more toned and masculine.
Every man is different and likely has his own body type and goals for himself. Dr. Perez-Gurri and Dr. Garcia design every gynecomastia procedure to match the patient’s unique anatomy and preferences. They employ the latest techniques to ensure a safe surgery that is customized to the individual.
Many men who have excess breast tissue do not have a positive self-image. Due to their gynecomastia, they might avoid social situations that involve removing their shirts, such as going to the pool or beach. After surgery, they can feel confident participating in the events they used to shy away from. They can be comfortable with their bodies both physically and emotionally.
After surgery, a compression garment is used to reduce swelling and aid in the healing process. Patients should rest the first few days and avoid moving the upper body, especially the shoulders. Most patients can return to work in seven to 10 days. Light activity can be resumed in two to three weeks, while strenuous activities should be avoided for six weeks. Patients should stay out of the sun until swelling and bruising have subsided (typically in six weeks).
The liposuction incisions are small and provide just enough room to insert a cannula. If surgical excision is necessary, incisions will be placed around the areolas. With time, scarring will fade and become less noticeable, if visible at all.
The cost of gynecomastia surgery will depend on the technique employed, the surgeon’s experience, and the geographic location of the procedure. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the average cost of gynecomastia surgery in 2015 was $3,345. This price does not include operating room fees, anesthesia costs, or any other surgery-related expenses.
There may be some swelling and bruising following the procedure. Any pain or discomfort can be controlled with prescription medication.
Dr. Perez-Gurri or Dr. Garcia will perform liposuction, surgical excision, or both to eliminate gynecomastia. The technique used will be based on the severity of the patient’s glandular tissue, fat, and skin. Liposuction involves small, discreet incisions on the chest. A small, hollow tube (cannula) hooked up to a vacuum device is used to suction out the fat. If a patient has a significant amount of glandular tissue and skin to be removed, surgical excision (often combined with liposuction) is used. Excision involves incisions beneath each breast along the crease or around the areola. Glandular tissue and fat are removed. If necessary, excess skin is excised. Incisions are closed using sutures, and a compression garment is placed over the chest.
As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with gynecomastia surgery, such as:
Gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
